A man carrying a firearm near the White House was shot by the US Secret Service after an armed confrontation shortly after midnight on Sunday. The incident occurred near 17th and F Streets, NW, close to the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. President Donald Trump was in Florida at the time.
According to the Secret Service, local law enforcement had alerted them on Saturday about a potentially suicidal individual traveling to Washington from Indiana. Around midnight, agents located the suspect’s parked vehicle and spotted a man matching the description nearby. When officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm, leading to an exchange of gunfire.
“The individual brandished a firearm, and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the Secret Service said in a statement. The man was shot and taken to a hospital. His condition remains unknown. No Secret Service agents were injured in the incident.
Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed that the Metropolitan Police Department would lead the investigation, as it is responsible for handling use-of-force incidents involving law enforcement in Washington, DC. The agency stated that officers were acting on prior intelligence and responding to a direct security threat near the White House complex.
Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or further details about the firearm involved. The investigation remains ongoing, and officials have not disclosed whether additional security measures will be implemented in response to the incident.
